The superior orbital fissure syndrome is a rare symptom complex caused by affection of the nerves and vessels which pass through the superior orbital fissure. The characteristic signs and symptoms are ophthalmoplegia, ptosis, proptosis, dilatation and fixation of the pupil, anesthesia of the upper eyelid, cornea and forehead, and/or retroorbital pain. The etiology is usually considered to be infection (syphilis, tuberculosis or sinusitis), trauma or neoplasms. Recently the authors have experienced a case of superior orbital fissure syndrome on the right side which was attributed to ipsilateral pansinusitis in a 34-year-old man. He received intranasal sphenoethmoidectomy with Caldwell-Luc operation and the symptoms improved well.
