A Clinical Study on Vestibular and Auditory Symptoms in Migraine and Tension Headache Patients

ABSTRACT

Differential diagnosis of vertigo is one of the most difficult problems in otologic area. Vertigo or dizziness is not uncommon symptoms in migrainous patients. Patients who complain vertigo and visit otolaryngologic clinic are frequently diagnosed as migraine after careful history taking, physical examination and vestibular function tests and showed improved symptom with anti-migraine treatment. The frequency of vestibular and auditory symptoms such as vertigo, non-specific dizziness, hearing disturbance and tinnitus in migraine and tension headache patients who diagnosed as HIS criteria were studied. And also we evaluated the frequency of motion sickness in the two headache groups. 86 headache-free subjects served as controls. All the patients were evaluated by questionnaire. Results of our study showed that patients with migraine present significantly more vertigo, tinnitus, and motion sickness than patients with tension headache and controls. There was no significant difference between tension headache group and controls, but significant in hearing distrubance.
