ABSTRACT

A comparative study was performed with acoustic rhinometry(AR) and computerized tomography(CT) of the nasal cavity in 30 normal subjects to evaluate the validity and characteristics of acoustic rhinometric test. Cross sectional areas measured by each technique showed statistically significant correlation in terms of distance from the nostril throughout the entire nasal cavity. The two measurements showed a better linear correlation in the anterior part of the nasal cavity up to 24mm from the nostril when compared with the posterior portion of the nasal cavity beyond the point. Mean cross sectional areas measured by AR were constantly less than those measured by CT of the nasal cavity up to 33mm from the nostril, while mean cross sectional areas measured by AR were larger than those by CT scans beyond the site. The first and the second notches by AR measurements were identified at similar distance from the nostril as those by nasal cavity CT.
