ABSTRACT

Complete or incomplete failure of relaxation of the cricopharyngeus muscle is termed cricopharyngeal achalasia and is a common cause of dysphagia. This type of cricopharyngeal dysfunction may result from a large number of disorders. Many causes are idiopathic. The most common cause is cerebrovascular desease. Delayed opening of the cricopharyngeus muscle resulting in aspiration and repeated pulmonary infection. Recently, we experienced a case of cricopharyngeal achalasia of 40 years old male patient, who was treated with cricopharyngeal myotomy, with good result.
