A Clinical Study of the Laryngotracheal Stenosis

ABSTRACT

Laryngotracheal stenosis remains as one of the most vexing problem in the otolaryngology. Many etiologic factors were high tracheostomy, cuffed endotracheal tube and wound infection. Inspite of the development of new treatment methods, patients are still increasing. Laryngotracheal stenosis have been dealt with many medicosurgical procedures such as dilatation, stent, laryngofissure with or without skin of mucosal graft and segmental resection. In the past 8 years the authors have experienced 21 cases of laryngotracheal stenosis and results are as follows ; 1) The age and sex distribution shows highest frequency under 10 years of age, 7 cases(33%), and more often found in the males(2 : 1). 2) The causes of stenosis were tracheostomy, 14 cases(66.6%), and long term intubation, 5 cases(23.8%). 3) Preceding diseases were head trauma, 12 cases(57.2%), heart & neuro surgery, 5 cases(23.8%). 4) The sites of stenosis were trachea, 9 cases(42.8%), laryngotrachea, 8 cases(38.1%), and larynx, 4 cases(19.1%). 5) In treating, conservative methods were 9 cases(42.8%), and surgical methods were 12 cases(57.2%).
