The Significance of Modified LOT Test in Malingering Test

ABSTRACT

We know that when the off time of the Bekesy interrupted signal was lengthened from conventional 200 to 800 msec, the tendency of nonorganic patients to trace the type V pattern was dramatically enhanced. Therefore, in this study authors evaluated 40 persons with normal hearing with fixed frequency Bekesy audiometry using 0.25 and 1.0 sec on/off time interrupted tone and continuous tone tracing for the detection of malingering. The results were obtained as follows ; 1) Normal hearing threshold was below 10 dB in all frequency in all type tracing. 2) According to by Hopkinson's criteria, the detection rate of nonorganicity in 0.25 sec on/off time interrupted and continuous tone was 50.8% and the detection rate of nonorganicity in 1.0 sec on/off time interrupted and continuous tone was 89.2%. 3) The arbitrary threshold gap between 0.25 sec on/off time interrupted tone and continuous tone was 5.75±0.87, 7.33±0.67 and 5.13±0.89 dB respectively in each 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz. And the arbitrary threshold gap between 1.0 sec on/off time interrupted tone and continuous tone was 10.20±0.75, 10.38±0.69 and 9.58±1.0 dB respectively in each 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz. 4) The arbitrary threshold gap of 1.0 sec on/off time interrupted tone was larger than that of 0.25 sec on/off time interrupted tone as 4.45±0.55, 3.05±0.65 and 4.45±0.59 dB respectively in each 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz. 5) With above results authors concluded that the modified LOT test was as good as LOT test in malingering test.
