ABSTRACT

Traditionally, it has been considered that hypopharyngeal cancer is poor prognosis and difficult in surgical management. Even if surgical treatment is applied, general choice has been extraradical procedure. Recently, this trend seems to be changing ; single therapy is abandoned, combined treatment is preferred and conservative surgical approach is preferred to the radical surgery if involvement is not severe. This trend seems to not increase failure rate with good rehabilitation of voice. In out department, partial pharyngolaryngectomy was carried out for a patient of pyriform sinus cancer with satisfactory rehabilitation to the patient about natural respiration without impediment of voice and swallowing.
