ABSTRACT

Electrogustometry(EGM) test compares electrical taste thresholds between the two sides of the anterior part of the tongue. An abnormal elevation on one side indicates a chorda tympani nerve deficit. Authors measured and analysed EGM thresholds of 212 out-patients without ear and oral diseases and neural lesions. The average thresholds for the sweet taste are given as follows : under 10 yrs, 6.64 uA ; 11-20 yrs, 6.25 uA ; 21-30 yrs, 7.91 uA ; 31-40 yrs, 7.26 uA ; over 41 yrs, 17.52 uA. The results show a threshold increase with increase in age. There is no significant differences in the thresholds between the two sides of the tongue. There is no significant differences of the thresholds between the sexes.
