ABSTRACT

We have statistically analysed the 85 cases of the foreign bodies in air and food passage during the period of last 4 years from June 1979 to May 1983. The following results were obtained. 1) The total numbers of foreign bodies in food and air passage were 85 cases. Among of them, 76 cases (89.4%) were in food passage and 9 cases (10.6%) were in air passage. 2) The frequently encountered foreign bodies in food passage were coins (56 cases : 73.7%), fish bones, chicken bones, Badook stones and denture in order. Beans, pieces of chestnut and plastic materials were lodged in air passage. 3) In sex distribution, 42 cases were in male and 43 cases were in female, so the ratio between male and female was 1 : 1. 4) In the age distribution, 67.1% of foreign bodies in food passage were under 5 years old and 88.9% of foreign bodies of air passage were under 10 years old. 5) The most prevalent site of lodgement in the food passage was first esophageal narrowing (90.8%). In air passage, 55.5% were in the bronchus and all of them were in the left main bronchus. 6) In duration of lodgement, 82.9% of foreign bodies in food passage, and 55.5% of foreign bodies of air passage were removed within 24 hours. 7) The complications we have encountered due to foreign bodies were mild esophageal laceration and esophagitis in food passage, and pneumonia, atelectasis and others in air passage. There were closely related with the sort of foreign bodies. 8) Removal of foreign bodies were performed by esophagoscopy and bronchoscopy (transoral or inferior bronchoscopy). The most ideal method for removal of foreign bodies in air passage was ventilating bronchoscopy.
