ABSTRACT

With the advancement of endoscopy, middle meatal antrostomy has become a popular surgery for treatment of the chronic maxillary sinusitis. But it has its own problems, such as scar contracture or adhesion of artificial ostium. For the prevention of these problems, author tried to insert the ventilating tube through the openings of middle meatal antrostomy. Among a total 26 cases (22 patients) on whom were undertaken the ventilating tube procedure, patient follow-up for at least six months and end-results reporting was performed on only 10 cases. The results were as follows : 1) Among 10 cases, four cases had no polyps and another six had polyps. Among four cases with no polyps, three had adequate patent ostium but one had a small opening. Among six cases with polyps, three had adequate patent ostium and one had a small opening, but in two cases ostium was obstructed by polypoid tissues. 2) By the arbitrary score of symptoms, abjective effects of each surgery were evaluated, there was no significant difference between Caldwell-Luc operation, middle meatal antrostomy with the ventilating tube and only middle meatal antrostomy. 3) We found no specific complications among the 26 cases.
